The Eureka Springs School of the Arts (ESSA) recently opened its doors to the public for a memorable spring studio stroll on Thursday, May 23rd. Nestled in the heart of Eureka Springs, Arkansas, ESSA’s picturesque campus provided the perfect backdrop for a day of art appreciation and exploration.
Woodturning Wonders at the ESSA Wingate Iron and Wood Studio
As guests wandered through the campus, they were treated to a showcase of creativity from three vibrant workshops. The journey began at the ESSA Wingate Iron and Wood studio, where attendees were greeted with libations before diving into a mesmerizing woodturning demonstration by accomplished instructor Matt Monaco (Grandview, MO). With finesse and skill, Matt transformed a simple block of wood into a captivating spindle, leaving the audience in awe. His workshop, “Beginning Foundations in Wood,” promised an equally enriching experience for aspiring woodworkers.
Polymer Clay Applications and Jewelry in the ESSA Small Metals Studio
From there, the stroll led to the ESSA Small Metals studio, where artist and instructor Jeff Dever (Silver Spring, MD) unveiled the intricate process behind his stunning polymer clay jewelry creations. Demonstrating techniques from his workshop, “Jewelry Pas de Deux: Hollow Form and Reinforced Armature Techniques for Polymer Clay Jewelry.” Guests were enthralled by Jeff’s artistic prowess and the versatility of polymer clay to create priceless pieces of art with widely available, affordable materials.
Creative Printmaking in the ESSA 2D Studio
After indulging in snacks and refreshments at the ESSA Founders building, the studio stroll continued to the 2D Studio, where Dana Finimore (Mountain View, AR) shared her vibrant printmaking techniques in the workshop “Gel Plate Printing Techniques,” incorporating organic elements from the wooded surroundings of the ESSA campus for added inspiration. She shared a demonstration on gel plate printing to the delight of viewers, showcasing this accessible art medium that can be used to create incredible prints with minimal equipment. Guests of the studio stroll milled around the 2D studio admiring the art created by the students.
Meeting the Summer Ceramics Artists in Residence
The event’s grand finale was a visit to the Ceramics studio, featuring Summer Ceramics Artists in Residence, Peggy Roadifer (Belle Fourche, SD), and Elaina Michalski (Liberty, MO). These talented artists captivated attendees with their skillful demonstrations and valuable insights. Following their presentations, an engaging artist Q&A allowed guests to delve deeper into their creative processes. Attendees also enjoyed an exclusive preview of the remarkable work Peggy and Elaina have been crafting during their residency. ESSA will celebrate their accomplishments with a closing reception and sale on June 15 from 12 pm to 5:30 pm, providing an opportunity for everyone to view and purchase their finished pieces.
