On Saturday, September 28th, Eureka Springs School of the Arts (ESSA) welcomed visitors for its highly anticipated Fall Studio Stroll, an event that celebrates community, creativity, and hands-on artistry. The autumn air added a layer of magic to the experience as guests of all ages wandered through the scenic ESSA campus, exploring various art studios, enjoying live demonstrations, and meeting local and visiting artists. This free event offered a fantastic opportunity to engage with the artistic process, all while savoring light refreshments and fueling inspiration.
A Journey Through ESSA's Art Studios
The highlight of the afternoon was a diverse lineup of three workshops, each highlighting a distinct art form. These sessions offered a firsthand glimpse into the creative process, showcasing the talents of both instructors and students Let’s take a closer look at each one:
Abstract Metal Sculpture from Found Objects with Joe Malesky
The first stop on the stroll was the Windgate Iron Studio, where instructor Joe Malesky gave an exciting demonstration of his “Abstract Metal Sculpture” class. Using reclaimed steel and found objects, Joe teaches students how to transform everyday materials into unique abstract sculptures. His focus on balance, negative space, and spontaneous design allowed participants to explore their creativity in unconventional ways. Joe’s demo was not only inspiring but also a testament to the power of working with sustainable materials.
Thoughtful Bowl Design with Phil Sikes
Next, the group ventured to the Windgate Wood Studio for a woodturning demo led by instructor Phil Sikes. With his warm and approachable teaching style, Phil showed guests the intricacies of bowl design. Projected onto a screen for easy viewing, his demo allowed everyone to see the process of turning a simple block of wood into a thoughtfully designed bowl. His emphasis on form and function demonstrated how everyday objects can transcend utility and become works of art. From open-form bowls to enclosed shapes, the class expanded students’ understanding of wood as a versatile medium.
Make Your Own Watercolor Set and Art Journal with Amber Leibee
After a brief refreshment break, the group made their way to the ESSA 2D Studio to witness Amber Leibee’s captivating demo on watercolor and ink creation. In her workshop, Amber teaches students how to handcraft their own watercolor paint using natural pigments, create locally foraged botanical ink, and bind a personal watercolor and sketch journal. Her demo showcased the beauty of making your own art supplies from scratch, adding a personal and sustainable touch to one’s creative toolkit. Participants were enchanted by her explanation of how pigments work and the history behind them.
A Special Sneak Peek at the Artists in Residence
As the evening unfolded, guests were treated to an exclusive preview of the works created by ESSA’s 2024 Fall Ceramics Artists in Residence, Neena Wang and Sabrina Barilone. Neena and Sabrina shared insights into their artistic processes and discussed their current projects. Visitors were captivated by their unique styles and the depth of thought behind each piece.
