Jim McCoy Veterans Program
Honoring Service Through Creativity
The Jim McCoy Veterans Program helps veterans discover connection, purpose, and community through art.
Hosted by the Eureka Springs School of the Arts (ESSA), this program provides free creative experiences for veterans in Arkansas and throughout the Ozarks. Veterans can explore new skills, connect with others, and experience the transformative power of making art.
The program honors the legacy of Jim McCoy, a Vietnam Veteran, dedicated ESSA staff member, and passionate advocate for veterans. His vision continues to inspire opportunities that bring veterans together through creativity and shared experiences.
Why Art Matters for Veterans
The transition from military service to civilian life can bring unique challenges. Many veterans seek opportunities to build community, reduce isolation, and discover new sources of purpose.
Art provides a meaningful path forward.
Creative activities encourage focus and self-expression. They also help people build confidence while learning new skills. In addition, art creates opportunities for connection and conversation in a welcoming environment.
At ESSA, veterans can step away from daily pressures and engage in hands-on creative experiences surrounded by the natural beauty of the Arkansas Ozarks.
The Legacy of Jim McCoy
Jim McCoy served with distinction in Vietnam as part of the 8th Cavalry Airmobile. During his military service, he earned the Bronze Star, Air Medal, and Combat Infantry Badge.
After his military career, Jim became an important part of the ESSA community. He worked tirelessly to expand opportunities for veterans and strengthen relationships with organizations that serve those who have served our country.
ESSA established the Jim McCoy Veterans Program to honor his life, service, and commitment to fellow veterans.
In addition, ESSA’s commitment to accessibility extends beyond veterans programming. Through the school’s scholarship program, ESSA helps remove financial barriers so more people can participate in transformative arts education and creative experiences.
