For nearly 50 years, Doug Stowe has been shaping more than just wood—he’s been shaping the future of craftsmanship and education. A Co-Founder of the Eureka Springs School of the Arts (ESSA) and an Arkansas Living Treasure, Doug’s journey from woodworker to educator to author is nothing short of inspiring.
His philosophy, Wisdom of the Hands, is rooted in the belief that hands-on learning enriches our understanding of the world. From publishing 15 books and over 100 articles to teaching at institutions like Clear Spring School and the University of Arkansas, Doug has dedicated his life to sharing his knowledge and passion. His work not only highlights the beauty of native Arkansas hardwoods but also the importance of preserving traditional handcrafting skills.
Doug was recently featured in article published by the Eureka Springs Independent newspaper detailing his career, legacy, the impact his teaching has had on young minds, and his philosophies on woodworking.

Doug has three upcoming workshops at ESSA: Scandinavian Bentwood Boxes – May 16-18, Make a Spoon Carving Knife – June 10 & 11, & Build a Small Cabinet – June 25-29.
Scholarship applications and ESSA’s Early Bird Discount deadline for Spring & Summer of 2025 workshops is February 15th, 2025.
