Downtown Eureka Springs became a moving work of art during the 2026 ArtRageous Parade, as artists, performers, musicians, makers, and creative spirits filled Spring Street with color, rhythm, costumes, imagination, and joyful community celebration.
Hosted by the Eureka Springs School of the Arts (ESSA), the annual ArtRageous Parade continues to grow as one of the most unique and beloved art events in Eureka Springs and Northwest Arkansas. Held each year on the first weekend of May, the parade officially launches May Fine Arts Month, a citywide celebration of art, music, performance, creativity, and culture throughout the Arkansas Ozarks.
From giant handcrafted gnomes and fantasy queens to live musicians, theatrical tea parties, disco dancers, and surreal costumed characters, the ArtRageous Parade once again proved that in Eureka Springs, art does not stay inside gallery walls. It dances through downtown streets, invites audience participation, and brings the entire creative community together.
ESSA Leads a Celebration of Hands-On Creativity
Leading the parade were the artists, instructors, staff, supporters, and creative community surrounding ESSA, the Eureka Springs School of the Arts. Located just minutes from historic downtown Eureka Springs, ESSA is nationally recognized for immersive workshops and hands-on creative experiences in woodworking, ceramics, welding, blacksmithing, painting, stained glass, jewelry making, fiber arts, photography, metalsmithing, and more.
The ArtRageous Parade reflected ESSA’s mission perfectly: encouraging fearless creativity, artistic exploration, craftsmanship, and meaningful community connection through the arts.
Throughout the parade route, handmade costumes, sculptural builds, rolling art installations, musicians, dancers, and theatrical performances transformed downtown Eureka Springs into a living gallery of creativity and self-expression.
For visitors experiencing the parade for the first time, ArtRageous offered something increasingly rare: an immersive arts experience where artists and audience members celebrate side-by-side.
Grand Marshal John Rankine Honored for Creative Legacy
This year’s ArtRageous Parade honored artist, writer, activist, and community catalyst John Rankine as Grand Marshal.
Through decades of public art projects, exhibitions, performances, creative happenings, and artistic advocacy, Rankine has played a major role in shaping the vibrant arts culture that defines Eureka Springs today. His work has inspired generations of local artists while helping establish the city as one of the most creative communities in Arkansas.
Costumes, Music, and Creative Chaos Filled Downtown Eureka Springs
The ArtRageous Parade thrives on surprise, spectacle, and imagination, and this year’s celebration delivered unforgettable moments around every corner.
Crowds lined Spring Street beneath perfect spring skies as whimsical fantasy characters, fairy queens, musicians, artists, dancers, and theatrical performers moved through downtown in a colorful procession of creativity.
One participant appeared in a surreal crocheted pink mask complete with a giant third eye and bright red lips, looking like something stitched together between dreamscape, puppet theater, and avant-garde performance art. Nearby, oversized mushroom hats, sparkling makeup, elaborate gowns, and Wonderland-inspired costumes transformed the sidewalks into a living fantasy world.
The Eureka Springs Theatre Company brought theatrical energy and playful absurdity to the parade with a Mad Hatter-inspired tea party performance that felt equal parts immersive theater, street performance, and creative fever dream.
One of the largest crowd favorites was Rocksberry the Gnome, a giant handcrafted wooden sculpture created by artist Stephen R. Feilbach. Rolling through downtown like a folk tale brought to life, the towering gnome perfectly captured the playful spirit and handcrafted creativity that define the ArtRageous Parade.
Live music echoed through downtown as parade-goers clapped, danced, and moved alongside performers. Spectators encountered ghostly historical figures from Eureka Springs history, plein air painters celebrating the Eureka Springs Plein Air Festival, disco dancers from St. James Episcopal Church, and even a paddleboard floating down Spring Street courtesy of SUP Outfitters.
