In appreciation of our veterans, ESSA will be hosting a day of free workshops in varying mediums, open to any US military veteran, with a free lunch provided. This event is funded by donations to the Jim McCoy Veterans Fund.
This year’s Veterans Appreciation Day activities will include:
- Plasma Cutting (Iron) with Robert Babcock
- Make a Pepper Mill (Woodturning) with Ray Taylor
- Make a Charcuterie Board (Woodworking) with Steve Walter
- Copper Jewelry (Small Metals) with Mary Lou Christie
- Printmaking (2D) with Jessica Ames-Russell
ESSA will begin taking registrations for Veteran’s Appreciation Day, 2025, on Tuesday, September 16th at 10 AM (CST).

About the Jim McCoy Veterans Fund
The Jim McCoy Veterans Fund has been established to honor the memory of our treasured friend and long time staff member of ESSA, Jim McCoy. A US military veteran himself, Jim served in Vietnam with the 8th Cavalry Airmobile where he was awarded the Air Medal, Combat Infantry Badge and Bronze Star for his service. He always remembered his fellow Vietnam Veterans and all who served, especially honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
Jim worked tirelessly to establish and expand veterans programs at ESSA, beginning with the seed of an idea in 2017. Jim was the driving force behind the creation of an annual veterans appreciation event, a dedicated veterans scholarship fund, and an ongoing partnership with the VA Healthcare System of the Ozarks. In honor of his dedication to ESSA’s veterans programs and all of his fellow military veterans, ESSA has named the Jim McCoy Veterans Fund to recognize Jim’s legacy of service.
The Jim McCoy Veterans Fund will provide scholarships and free workshops for US military veterans several times each year, including during our annual Veterans Appreciation Day in November.
