Turning Pens and Pencils with Carbide Tools

You will learn basic woodturning techniques, lathe operation, and safety. You will turn pencils and pens using carbide tools. These tools are a safer introduction for the beginning woodturner, providing skills to transition to standard bevel woodturning tools as you advance. Other skills you will learn are preparing wood blanks, center finding, drilling, sanding, and finishing techniques utilizing the lathe.

All materials included.

Additional materials:**Additional wood exotic or special glued blanks will be available for separate student purchase  if so desired
**Additional pen kits will be available for purchase from the instructor should some students be ahead and want to make additional pen/pencil

Students must be 18 or older to participate.

About Instructors

Darla (Eureka Springs, AR) has a background in luthiery and her interest in woodturning came naturally through her work as ESSA’s Iron and Wood Studio Coordinator. She began using carbide turning tools and soon became proficient at turning pens, handles, bowls, etc. These tools taught her about woodturning by safely making smaller gift projects that will be cherished for a lifetime.
