You will learn basic woodturning techniques, lathe operation, and safety by turning pencils and pens using carbide tools. These tools are a safer introduction to the craft for the beginning woodturner, providing skills to transition to standard bevel woodturning tools as you advance. Other skills you will learn are preparing wood blanks, center finding, drilling, sanding, and finishing techniques utilizing the lathe.

All materials included, with an option to purchase additional blanks and kits.

Students must be 18 or older and show proof of vaccination to participate.

About Instructor

Darla Gray-Winter
Darla (Eureka Springs, AR) has a background in luthiery and her interest in woodturning came naturally through her work as ESSA's Iron and Wood Studio Coordinator. She began using carbide turning tools and soon became proficient at turning pens, handles, bowls, etc. These tools taught her about woodturning by safely making smaller gift projects that will be cherished for a lifetime.
