Artist Talk: Why Design

When approaching an idea, do you begin pen in hand, paper at the ready, and think about what form of jewelry you’ll design, a pendant, earrings, ring? Next, do you draw it on paper, considering your materials, the function – which may dictate the form, and the audience you wish to appeal to?
Or do you get out your materials, tools, an image, and dive right in? Do you let the “feel” of the “stuff” you’re working with guide you? Do you like to see how the various parts sort of talk to each other and then play with differing combinations of those parts? Maybe put a thing here or take a thing out over there. See how you feel and continue to work, play, experiment.
The approaches are different, but to be successful, it’s necessary the artist understand the elements of art and principles of design and utilize them at every phase of the process.
In this presentation, we will explore the elements and principles in new ways. We will discuss the various approaches to start a project and implement the design process.

Robert (Seymour, CT) is an artist/educator/author and developer of materials for artists. His work can be seen in numerous books, publications, museum and private collections around the world. Robert has taught for over 30 years working with students from kindergarten to graduate school as well as teaching workshops across the US and abroad.
